MoneyScience: Service Interrupted
!!!It's high time MoneyScience got an upgrade and here's why I'm taking a few days out of normal operations to do it.
It was only Christmas when I last upgraded MoneyScience but since then traffic to the site has almost tripled, putting a huge amount of strain on the single MySql database running things. You may have noticed that the site has been very slow recently!
With this in mind, I've been thinking hard about ways in which I can improve the day to day performance of the site without losing the fairly significent knowledge base that's already in place.
The solution came to me a couple of days ago and I'm enthusiastic enough about the idea to want to get things going as soon as possible - which is why I'm not going to be updating the site for the next 5-7 days.
What I'm going to do, rather than upgrade the existing database, is set up a completely fresh install. I'll migrate selected content across from this version which I'll then redevelop into a pure archive. In this way, the database load is split, all the content remains User / Google accessible and the newer or more popular material gets to run on a nice fast platform.
A useful outcome of this process is that it also gives me the opportunity to implement a more accessible style sheet and address some oustanding
issues with the presentation generally - the size of the text throughout the site, the complexity of the menus and the site structure overall. If you're interested in the new design check out the screenshots below.
